take me seriously please...as I pull my hair up into a high side ponytail (a la 1992) during my post-graduate level linguistics class. please take me seriously...I'm a teacher damn it.

take me seriously...as I balance a book on my head while strolling about the room reading a story about Kwanzaa...just so they'll pay attention to me...since I've given up on them listening (god forbid they try to understand).

take me seriously...as I arrange times to "fight" students after school. One, a Honduran student whom I call Joe Louis (Jose Luis), assures me that the hickey on his neck is a sign of creditibility and the cause of much envy...I ask him if he needs to visit the nurse. The second, a Bosinan boy whose brother's fingers were cut off by Yugoslavians during the war (the result: he won't talk to my Croatian student...unless it's to shout insults), looks at the list of the top-paid professions in America and says "In my country nobody makes that much money."

take me seriously...as I demonstrate my kickboxing ability for them in the hallway...my foot inches from their head...nearly six feet from the ground.

take me seriously...as I tear up in my classroom...because I can't keep my anger in check...or my students attention.

take me seriously...as I write horrible journal entries...because I loathe lesson planning.

just take me seriously.
